Responsible for managing an extensive intellectual property portfolio.
Performs market analyses to determine the commercial value of an invention and markets early stage University-developed technology to industry.
Negotiates terms and conditions, including royalties, of licenses with potential licensees.
Monitors licensee's obligations to meet milestones and reporting requirements.
Ensures that royalty payments are made according to appropriate agreements and instructs Financial Analyst regarding distribution of royalties to the appropriate entities.
Evaluates the patentability of disclosures and manages any resulting patent prosecution.
Determines if federal funding has been involved in the development of the invention and ensures that federal requirements with respect to these inventions are followed.
Ascertains the status of published results or anticipated publications on the invention.
Reviews existing grants and contracts for new technologies that might be emerging from research.
Evaluates software and copyright disclosure by faculty, identifies and reviews existing and new contracts for industry software programs and files appropriate copyright registration with the Department of Commerce.
Adheres to university, state and federal guidelines with respect to technology transfer agreements.
Maintains professional growth by participating in education programs and professional organizations, preferably as a speaker, workshop leader or committee member.
May supervise a Licensing Associate, intern or support staff.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
A PhD or JD and two years of academic technology transfer or similar experience in licensing or business development gained in industry OR a master's degree and three years of academic technology transfer or similar experience in licensing or business development gained in industry.
Education and/or work experience in health sciences and business/industry is desirable.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with academic scientists as well as executives in the biomedical industries, knowledge of current developments in the biomedical business sector and the desire to work as a team member.
Five plus years of experience in an academic or similar licensing role.
Demonstrated experience in closing complex license agreements.
Experience negotiating non-licensing contracts such as MTAs, DUAs, and collaborative research agreements.
Strong project management skills.
