JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides guidance and direction to payroll staff regarding payroll processes and procedures.

  • Employees in this job classification may perform some or all of the following duties: Manages federal and multi-state compliance for all Emory entities to ensure 100% accuracy and timeliness. Researches and resolves all tax notices with proper communication to agencies and internal staff.

  • Performs regular tax research to stay ahead of state and federal tax changes.

  • Trains Payroll staff to provide excellent customer service to Emory employees.

  • Answers and screens phone calls, assists walk-in customers and responds to emails and voicemail messages in a timely manner (within 24 hours).

  • Processes bi-weekly and monthly payrolls from beginning to end, including running the General Ledger process.

  • Processes garnishments as assigned; determines withholding amount, sets up deductions in the payroll system, and processes checks for mailing to withholding agencies or individuals as required by law.

  • Analyzes, corrects, inputs, and processes payroll data using PeopleSoft.

  • Identifies and corrects payroll errors before final paycheck processing.

  • Processes on demand checks; acts as backup for reviewing and confirming these checks.

  • Reviews and approves payroll adjustment requests for accuracy prior to each payroll run.

  • Communicates with requestor to make corrections, if needed.

  • Processes and reviews vacation and sick leave balance adjustments.

  • Manages and processes the appropriate payments and leave accruals for FLSA changes.

  • Processes payments for unused vacation to terminated employees.

  • Processes and maintains general deductions.

  • Remits payments to vendors in accordance with established payroll procedures.

  • Identifies and processes retro payments and overpayments.

  • Processes and reviews benefit adjustments.

  • Processes payroll forms and documents to include tax forms, direct deposits, time and attendance and employment verifications.

  • Processes ACH reversals and stop payments, as needed.

  • Performs account and bank reconciliations.

  • Controls all aspects of the stale dated check process.

  • Provides training for managers, timekeepers, and employees on the correct processes and procedures for utilizing the time and attendance systems; assists employees, managers, and timekeepers with questions.

  • Prepares journal entries, reconciles accounts, and provides General Ledger support, as needed.

  • Prepares monthly statistical reports using PeopleSoft queries and Microsoft Excel.

  • Participates in special projects, as assigned.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of college coursework and five years of payroll or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience with processing in-house payroll using PeopleSoft and Kronos preferred.

  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.

  • Experience with multi-state payroll processing, tax compliance and regulation, and garnishment management in a large organization desirable.

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
