The Sheehan lab is a translational research lab focused on developing new therapies for individuals with sickle cell disease. We are seeking an individual to perform experiments in a unique and fragile xenograft mouse model. Experience with mouse models and cell culture is essential. The job entails performing a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules under general supervision. Experiments will be designed in collaboration with the principal investigator. The candidate will maintain records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases, and perform simple statistical analyses with guidance, compile data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations. Handling of human blood samples is required; proof of immunization is required, and potentially additional immunizations may be needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Independently performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Devises highly specialized research procedures by applying a knowledge of advanced research techniques and equipment.

  • Provides input to protocol development.

  • Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel. Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.

  • Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.

  • Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.

  • Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.

  • Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.

  • May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.

  • Review literature for related research developments and techniques.

  • Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.

  • Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Oversee day to day operations, supervise division of projects across lab personnel, assist with the needs of assistant Professors and laboratory personnel, review weekly work plans with PI and staff.

  • Assist and update PI on project milestones, maintain project data and stored samples.

  • Maintain equipment, ensure regulatory and safety compliance, and conduct laboratory inspections.

  • Perform bi-annual performance reviews and conduct meetings with research staff as necessary.

  • Conduct interviews and assist PI in hiring new lab personnel.

  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze and assemble data, present and publish results, develop and update lab protocols and SOPs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICIATIONS:

  • Bachelor's of Science and two years of managerial experience.

  • Knowlege of molecular biology techniques, flow cytometry and mouse handling.
