The Senior Scientist (Technical Director) of the Winship Cancer Tissue and Pathology Shared Resource (Tissue SR) should be a qualified professional with experience and knowledge of biorepository operations and activities as well as knowledge of regulations and procedures designed to protect human subjects in the context of biospecimen-based research. Experience working in a clinical or CAP-accredited facility a plus. Responsible for the administration and operation of biorepository activities including oversight to ensure that the procurement, storage, processing, and distribution of biospecimens occurs in a cost- and time-efficient, CAP-compliant manner. Serves as a resource for current biobanking guidelines and best practices and uses this knowledge to regularly update standard operating procedures. Responsible for oversight of both the physical and virtual biospecimen inventory and provides oversight of data collection for biospecimens to ensure data quality and timeliness. Oversees specimen processing, such as histological, immunostaining, digital pathology and multiplex IHC services.
In collaboration with Winship leadership, the Sr. Scientist (Technical Director) develops and implements an organizational structure for the biorepository, participates in the governance review process, ensures appropriate staffing capable of performing biorepository activities, and contributes to the development of the annual budget and operating plan. Experience in the management and completion of submitted scientific projects, protocol development, facilitating team member training, determination of biospecimen quality (quality assurance [QA]/quality control [QC]), and assisting in grant and other funding applications are essential skills. Investigation and publication of the development of instrumentation, development of methods and quality improvement projects would be encouraged. The candidate will create and update documentation regarding tissue acquisition and processing through the tissue procurement shared resources. Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or MD and fifteen years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab. Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment. Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification. NOTE: Applicants applying with a M.D. or equivalent degree must be eligible for a Georgia medical license to meet the minimum qualifications.
Biorepository and laboratory management experience, including familiarity with quality management programs and CAP biorepository accreditation
Project management experience and training
Knowledge of human subjects research rules and regulations
Familiarity with laboratory information management systems such as Open Specimen and databases such as REDcap and Oncore
