Overview

The SVP of the MSK Service Line and Executive administrator for the Department of Orthopedics at Emory Healthcare is integral to driving the success of the department through strategic leadership, operational excellence, and a steadfast commitment to research and education. This role not only impacts the quality of care provided to patients but also shapes the future of musculoskeletal services within the healthcare system.

This position embodies a multifaceted leadership role that encompasses clinical, educational, and research missions, ensuring alignment with both EHC and Emory University School of Medicine objectives. The SVP aligns clinical and business functions to facilitate growth and clinical excellence of the service line and leads activities with the chair and Service Line Physician Leader to standardize practices, optimize patient service and workforce utilization, achieve quality goals, and meets research and educational objectives.

Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Operational Oversight:

  • Provide comprehensive leadership for MSK service line and academic department operations, ensuring effective management of clinical, budgetary, and human resources.

  • Collaborate with clinical departments and affiliated services to promote an integrated approach to patient care.

  • Facilitates the development of a culture of collaboration and excellence in quality, service, standardization, and performance accountability across all inter-professional care teams across EHC and all academic locations.

  • Provides support to designated committees to facilitate collaborative decision-making and strategy formulation.

  • Strategic Planning, Performance Enhancement and Growth:

  • Work closely with service line leadership, Department Chair and appropriate Division Directors and strategic planning to conduct strategic market assessments and develop growth-related programming and identify opportunities for expansion.

  • Lead initiatives for process improvement, focusing on optimizing patient service, workforce utilization, and achieving quality goals.

  • Foster the development of new clinical and administrative programs to enhance service delivery and adapt to changing healthcare demands.

  • Improved utilization of in-patient and Ambulatory Surgical Center operating rooms and optimizing each geographic presence of the MSK team by identifying and enhancing urgent and emergent care offerings, increasing the presence of providers on call at specific operating units, and leveraging the use of advanced practice providers.

  • Implement and monitor performance on impactful key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess resource utilization effectiveness and adherence to quality benchmark.

Financial Management:

  • Oversee financial performance and budgetary accountability for the clinical teams and department of Orthopaedics.

  • Leads, plans, coordinates, and is accountable for major administrative and clinical activities across the service line and Department of Orthopaedics including budget planning, financial analysis, data processing and managing grants and contracts ensuring alignment with institutional goals and defining fiscal needs.

Research and Education Accountability:

  • Ensure that research and educational missions are met, coordinating activities with program directors, division leaders and Vice Chairs within the Department.

  • Collaborate with various healthcare institutions (Grady, CHOA, VAMC) to enhance the learner experience for trainees and ensure that learner experience is optimal and that all trainees are experiencing an appropriate learning environment.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Act as a liaison between business leaders, health system executives, and service line departments to facilitate transparent communication and collaboration.

  • Disseminate vital information to key stakeholders regarding managed care, market requirements, cost-effective practices, customer-centric initiatives and services, and quality benchmarks.

Human Resources and Employee Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop leadership talent within the department, fostering an environment of professional growth and performance excellence.

  • Manage employee performance with ongoing feedback and support.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:

  • Ensure that all clinical operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations, maintaining necessary record-keeping for regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures all research activities must be conducted within the structure of the Emory University offices of research and sponsored programs and ensure the adherence to all rules and regulations of the University and School of Medicine.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proven leadership experience in healthcare administration, particularly in a musculoskeletal or related service line.

  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budget planning, financial analysis, and compliance.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster collaboration across various departments and stakeholders.

  • Ability to analyze complex data and leverage insights for strategic decision-making.

  • Commitment to quality patient care and continuous improvement in clinical operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree, preferably in business, finance, or related science field, and 10 years of professional business or management experience which includes experience in a clinical or healthcare environment.
