Description

Assists in software development and support including the generation of software specifications, development and revision of software applications, and testing those application. Writes and edits reports to provide recommendations, conclusions and other data.

Provides software development support including the identification and generation of software specifications and the designing, development, implementation and revision of software applications to meet business needs. Supports software applications and associated operating systems. Reviews software specifications, systems, models and coding using analytical and investigative methods and techniques to ensure required specifications meet system needs. Participates in software testing and subsequent modifications. Writes and edits reports to provide recommendations, conclusions and other data. Performs related responsibilities as required.

(3-YEAR TERM APPOINTMENT)

Emory University Libraries is looking for a Software Engineer to help initiate and implement creative and impactful uses of technology. Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer in the Library Technology and Digital Strategies department, the Software Engineer will contribute to the development of digital library services, including the institution’s preservation repository.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contributes to the design of library systems.

  • Assists in developing library applications.

  • Supports existing applications.

  • Tests new development.

  • Identifies training needs.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary job assignment as well as maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise developing web applications with Ruby on Rails.

  • Experience with Solr, Fedora Commons, and/or the Samvera Community gems and applications.

  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.

  • Experience working on Open Source software projects or with remote collaborators.

  • Familiarity and desire to work with agile methods

  • Familiarity with version control, test-driven development, continuous integration techniques and other development best practices or devops techniques.

  • Experience working in a library environment

  • Evidence of capacity for professional development, involvement, and contribution.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; as well as analytical and organizational skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

A bachelor's degree in computer science, math, engineering or a related field and one year of related experience in programming and software systems or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge of software development in a research institution context preferred.
