The Emory Libraries seek a dynamic professional to join the International Areas Studies team as South Asian Studies Librarian. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to serving Emory’s faculty and students through the lifecycle of their research by serving as a liaison for South Asian Studies, providing consultations and instruction, and building and cataloging collections. The successful candidate will report to the International Area Studies Team Leader and will join a team of seven in the International Area Studies team.
The South Asian StudiesLibrarian will be focused primarily on South Asian Studies within the Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies (MESAS) department, as well as areas within the Religion and History departments, to provide a full range of subject specific library services to include collection development, consultation, instruction, cataloging, and assessment. The librarian will collaborate with and support faculty in course-specific ways, including providing point of need instruction sessions and assignments, research guides and/or tutorials. The librarian will also work closely with other librarians and units to understand and integrate area research and curricular needs with the Libraries’ collections and services. Partnering with fellow subject librarians, other Library units, and campus organizations, the South Asian Studies Librarian will work to create and sustain strong relationships with Emory’s Center for Digital Scholarship, the Access and Resource Services division, and Academic Technology Services to engage in evolving campus initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
As South Asian Studies Librarian you will engage with users and develop and catalog collections.
Serve as primary liaison to, and actively develops professional relationships with, faculty, students and staff in South Asian Studies. May include other areas within the International Area Studies Team if needed.
Plan and deliver innovative outreach and instruction services; teaches research tools and skills relevant to the discipline.
Collaborate with faculty to achieve information and digital literacies and archival pedagogy learning outcomes in course-specific ways.
Provide in-depth, specialized consultation in support of the entire research lifecycle.
Develop content for subject-based web pages.
Partner with other librarians who acquire and catalog related materials.
Assist faculty engaged in digital scholarship projects and teach and learning with technology initiatives; collaborates as needed with Emory’s Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) and Academic Technology Services.
Contribute to University efforts to assess and promote institutional scholarship.
Develop and manage excellent electronic, multimedia, and print collections in South Asian Studiesto support the research and teaching needs of the Emory University community.
Promote resources using current tools and technologies.
Collaborate with colleagues in related fields to acquire materials.
Catalog related materials OR partners with Access and Resource Services Division to catalog materials.
Provide marketing and assessment of library services.
Participates in professional and scholarly associationsand organizations including maintaining membership and/or accreditation; attending meetings, conferences, and workshops; and serving in appointed or elected positions.
Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary job assignment as well as maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology.
Adheres to guidelines outlined in the Handbook Governing the Librarian series for Faculty-Equivalent Librarians to ensure appointment, appointment renewal and promotion-in-rank
Participates in library and campus committees as appropriate for service purposes.
ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent education and library experience.
Reading knowledge of Devanagari based languages, such as Sanskrit and/or Hindi.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with instruction, information literacy, and assessment of library services and resources.
Ability to collect and catalog relevant materials.
Familiarity with new technologies, such as text-mining, network analysis, data-visualization, and other relevant digital applications.
Commitment to user-centered library services.
Strong interest in technology and tools for research and teaching.
Strong understanding of the key issues and trends in instruction, collection development, and research, in the subject area of South Asian Studies.
Knowledge of digital humanities and scholarly communication issues and trends within relevant disciplines.
Evidence of excellent communication, public speaking, teaching, writing and analytical skills.
Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
Demonstrated willingness to respond to new opportunities with initiative, creative energy, and leadership.
Evidence of active participation, involvement, or leadership in local, state, regional, national, or international professional or scholarly associations.
Advanced degree in South Asian Studies or related discipline.
Knowledge of religious studies discipline.
Knowledge of an additional South Asian language, preferably Telugu or Tibetan.
Experience cataloging monographs in an academic library.
Practical knowledge of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
Experience working with Aleph, ALMA, vendor sites, like YBP’s GOBI, LibGuides, LibAnswers, and other assessment tools.
