SUMMARY:

  • The Associate Director – Research for The Carter Center’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP) directly assists the Senior Associate Director – Research to accelerate and operationalize the GWEP research agenda, monitor progress of research studies against milestones and deliverables, and work in coordination with national program staff (e.g., The Carter Center’s Country Representatives [CRs], national program Research Coordinators) to ensure research is executed, per protocol, efficiently and effectively.

  • The Associate Director – Research reports directly to the Senior Associate Director – Research for the GWEP and works with other members of the GWEP’s Research & Innovation Team as well as the program’s Implementation & Administration and Data Teams.

  • The position also liaises with various partners.

  • Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) is required.

  • We are seeking a candidate with advanced knowledge of research methodologies and techniques to coordinate efforts between numerous studies investigating transmission of Guinea worm.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Work with program Epidemiologists and the Senior Associate Director of Research to provide technical backstopping related to scientific theory, research methods, and data collection and analysis for a variety of research projects.

  • Reviews and provides feedback on terms of reference, research trip reports, quarterly research reports, and other research deliverables.

  • Contributes to the development of research protocols and supports related pilots or formative research initiatives; drafts, reviews, and edits text for studies, as needed.

  • Ensures compliance with ethical review board approvals, including the development of IRB and other ethical review board applications.

  • Assists with the planning and development of survey instruments, guidelines, and procedures to collect required data.

  • Monitors the progress of studies conducted under the auspices of the program's research portfolio and tracks progress against milestones and deliverables; develops tracking matrices and reports to assess or monitor study performance.

  • Ensures study data and systems are maintained, accurately documented, and appropriately archived.

  • Reviews study protocols and researches documents, identifies discrepancies, and proposes solutions.

  • Assists with the coordination of various aspects of studies with national program staff and investigation teams, as appropriate.

  • Conducts extensive literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their applicability to the research.

  • Updates and maintain the program's citation and reference management tool to ensure that it includes the latest program-related literature.

  • May work with Epidemiologists and other study investigators to clean and process datasets and perform statistical analyses related to specific studies.

  • Provides direction to consultants and team members, as needed. Assists with the coordination of research meetings, as needed.

  • Communicates with the Senior Associate Director of Research, Epidemiologists, and Program Assistants supporting the program's Research & Innovation Team regarding the status of the program's research studies, delegated projects, and work activities to ensure awareness and efficient and effective communication with study investigation teams and national program staff.

  • Develops and delivers presentations, represent The Carter Center at national meetings, and co-authors publications.

  • Works with awareness that the role of The Carter Center is to provide technical and financial assistance to national public health programs, that countries are sovereign, that The Carter Center staff and researchers conducting studies under the auspices of national public health programs must work in support of national program efforts and in close and harmonious collaboration with the national program leadership and staff.

  • Oversees relationships with in-country staff and collaborators, including trainings on research protocols.

  • Liaise with Program Implementation & Administration and Data Teams to support national programs and the research carried out under the auspices of the program.

  • Provides guidance and ensures compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.

  • May recommend and develop efficient procedures for the execution of research and the implementation of program activities.

  • Maintains professional growth and development of self by identifying educational/training programs, professional organizations, activities, and resources to maintain knowledge of national trends and to promote leading edge expertise.

  • Collaborates on or author reports and papers. Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, psychology or a related discipline and five years of research/professional experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience managing large studies with multiple study partners executed in rural, resource-poor contexts.

  • A history of conducting research and/or working with community-based public health or community development programs in Africa.

  • Detail-oriented team player who is able to work independently.

  • Good communication and personnel management skills.

  • Laboratory experience.

  • Experience managing and executing multiple projects and working with senior health policy makers and executives.

  • French fluency is an advantage.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines.  All non-exempt employees must reside within the state of Georgia. The Carter Center reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
