JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Serves as master electrician, assistant technical director or other specialized technician for theatrical productions. Supervises and schedules technical crews and work calls for set and properties construction, electrical preparations and load-ins, rehearsals, performances and strikes.

  • Reads, understands and drafts theatrical ground plans, construction drawings, lighting plots and schedules. Performs multi-track recording and editing for sound projects. Repairs and maintains theater spaces, support areas, equipment and inventory.

  • Manages the technical activities during rehearsals and performances. Supervises crews involved with set and property construction, electrical systems and/or video and audio recording. Trains students in the use of technical equipment and supervises their work in the theater. May instruct undergraduate students in theater-related courses.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in theater or a related field and one year of related experience OR a high school diploma or equivalent and five years of related experience. A basic knowledge of computer technology. A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of related experience for bachelor's degree holders or five years of related experience for high school diploma holders.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to climb ladders and operate a genie lift and scissor lift.

  • Basic knowledge of A/V technology.

  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Oversee all technical aspects of lighting, sound, and video for theatrical productions.Supervise and schedule technical crews for various work calls, including light hangs, focus calls, technical rehearsals, and other related tasks.

  • Read, understand, and draft theatrical ground plans, construction drawings, lighting plots, and schedules. Perform multi-track recording and editing for sound projects.

  • Repair and maintain theater spaces, support areas, equipment, and inventory.Manage technical activities during rehearsals and performances, ensuring the smooth operation of all technical elements.

  • Supervise crews with set and property construction, electrical systems, and video and audio recording. Train students using technical equipment and supervise their work in the theater.

  • Instruct undergraduate students in theater-related courses, if required. Perform related responsibilities as required.

  • Work occasional evenings and weekends as needed, with a flexible work schedule to accommodate such situations.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, interpret, and organize the light plot to determine the feasibility and most efficient way to hang and focus lights from show to show.

  • Ensure load-in and strike are completed promptly in coordination with the scenery, props, and sound departments.

  • Manage and maintain all lighting, sound, and video inventories, ensuring all equipment is in good working condition. Support non-departmental activities such as performances by Dance and other University departments, ensuring all technical requirements are met.

  • Collaborate with the Technical Director to ensure the safety of students, staff, and performers, including overseeing safety protocols and procedures. Coordinate building maintenance with the Production Manager, ensuring all facilities are in good condition.

  • Manage rental or loan of Theater Emory lighting, sound, props, and equipment, ensuring all items are correctly accounted for. Plan, research, and engineer lighting practicals, special effects, and special projects, ensuring all designs are technically feasible.

  • Ensure the maintenance of a clean and safe electrics shop environment, including overseeing the proper storage and handling of hazardous materials. Manage storage and inventory of all shop tools and equipment, ensuring all items are properly maintained and accounted for.

  • Oversee the seasonal electrics budget to ensure productions are executed at or within budget guidelines, including providing cost estimates and tracking expenses.

  • Purchase consumables (lamps, gel, fluids, etc.) as necessary for the season and productions, working with designers to suggest substitutions as appropriate.Work with and lead a crew, ensuring all team members are appropriately trained and supervised.

  • Collaborate with the Lighting Designer to generate and maintain all necessary paperwork, including cue sheets and instrument schedules. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including enforcing safety procedures and maintaining cleanliness standards.

  • Perform any additional tasks as requested by the Production Manager.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting and understand the differing needs of theater personnel and hired individuals.Train students in using technical equipment and supervise them during various production activities

Required Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of theatrical equipment repair and maintenance.Ability to read, understand, and draft theatrical ground plans, construction drawings, and schedules.

  • Proficiency in programming ETC Eos family consoles.

  • Proficiency in Vectorworks and Lightwright software.

  • Knowledge of professional audio concepts and equipment, and QLab.

  • Knowledge of electrical components, wiring, soldering techniques, and hang and focus.

  • Knowledge of contemporary lighting fixtures, light board programming, power distribution, and practicals.

  • Ability to work with and lead a crew.

  • Excellent communication, organization, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and methods in the given field.

  • Skills in theatrical carpentry, MIG welding, theatrical rigging, and pneumatics are preferred.

  • Interest and experience in coordinating theater projects in non-traditional spaces and environments.

  • Proficiency in computer technology, including email, MS Office (Word, Excel), and online file sharing.

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice toemployee.
