The Division of Animal Resources within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a full time Training Coordinator to join our team. The Division of Animal Resources provides animal care, husbandry, veterinary care, and research support for the non-human primate colony.

The individual in this position will help develop, coordinate, and deliver didactic and hands-on training to the Emory Main Center DAR personnel. Greatest emphasis will be placed on training for all animal care and husbandry activities (initial and reoccurring) at the Main Center. With time, this role could expand to other units within animal resources.
This individual reports directly to the Training Manager within the Emory NPRC DAR and will have extensive involvement with the Animal Care Management Team, Supervisors and Animal Technicians. The individual will also work intermittently with individuals from other units including the Veterinary Department, Research Services, Behavior Management, Facilities, and Research.
Develops and implements training and continuing education programs for a large, diverse division in laboratory animal science.
Provides instruction in animal husbandry, veterinary and research procedures, and the use of hazardous materials in animal research.
Skills training will include, but is not limited to, animal handling, anesthesia and analgesia, utilizing aseptic technique during surgical procedures, and species-specific procedures training.
Conducts proficiency assessments for all University research employees as required for IACUC approval. May attend IACUC meetings and coordinate training activities with IACUC office.
Designs training materials, electronic presentations, and other training aids for in-person and online training programs for animal research staff within the Division of Animal Resources (DAR); may procure third-party training materials.
May conduct or coordinate continuing education for DAR employees, including classes for AALAS certification preparation, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other job-related topics.
Evaluates employee performance within training programs to ensure competency.
Maintains required training activity records and certification registries.
Reviews and manages SOPs for compliance and current relevancy.
Performs quality assurance assessments of training programs and recommends program changes to increase effectiveness.
Performs other related duties as required.
- Bachelor's degree and four years of related experience OR LATg certification, plus eight years of related experience which includes both laboratory animal experience and training experience.
- AALAS certifications and/or degrees in teaching or biological sciences are preferred.
Additional Job Responsibilities include the following but are not limited to:
Learn, review, and formalize training and documentation for a variety of animal care procedures and facility support practices (e.g., Standard Operating Procedures) related to husbandry personnel.
Assist in updating standard operating procedures and guidelines pertaining to the animal care program.
Consult and coordinate with Animal Care Management and Supervisors, and the Training Manager regarding training issues on a regular basis.
Schedule, perform, and document initial and ongoing training and instruction for animal technicians pertaining to animal care and use, animal welfare and regulations, departmental policies, updated guidelines and procedures, equipment use, and facility upkeep and maintenance.
Trainings may occur either with individuals or in group settings.
Maintain accurate and complete training records.
Coordinate/schedule cross training with other DAR Unit Managers.
Maintain continuing education in husbandry care and instructional techniques.
Perform proficiency reviews and evaluations of Animal Care personnel performing technical tasks to evaluate training effectiveness.
Work with Animal Care Management and Supervisors to address any concerns.
Develop, prepare, and modify instructional programs, teaching aids, materials, equipment, assessment methods, and recordkeeping practices associated with online, didactic and hands-on instruction of husbandry personnel.
Determine the need for materials, equipment, and instruments necessary for training activities.
Order or procure necessary items within budgetary limitations.
Construct training materials used in demonstrations; prepare, set up and use veterinary and husbandry related equipment and materials for training classes using safe procedures in handling equipment, animals, or hazardous materials.
Design, implement, and oversee instructional opportunities for personnel preparing for AALAS ALAT, LAT, and LATG exams and related certifications.
Search literature to determine methods that may improve the teaching and training of procedures and techniques.
Attend regular meetings with Animal Care personnel and supervisors; advise managers of potential problems with existing programs.
Other duties as needed.
