Description

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented undergraduate researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the well-being and proper nutrition of piglets in the Margulies Laboratory. The role involves close collaboration with Division of Animal Resources (DAR) personnel, lab members, adherence to feeding protocols, and diligent record-keeping.

Responsibilities:

  1. Communicate effectively with the lab and DAR personnel to coordinate the completion of the intake process for piglets.

  2. Initiate the feeding process following DAR's completion of animal intake procedures.

  3. Observe piglets for a minimum of 10 minutes post-feeding to monitor behaviors related to food and hierarchy establishment.

  4. Record feeding details, including date, time, and amount fed/consumed, on DAR forms such as the DAR feeding chart and Initial DAR room activity log form after each feeding session.

  5. Conduct daily weight measurements of piglets until weaning, recording data on the DAR log form.

  6. Communicate feeding transition to lab and DAR, utilizing emails, calls, text messages, and verbal contact.

  7. Collaborate with lab and DAR veterinary and husbandry staff to manage any unexpected or unusual circumstances that may arise.

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in a bachelors program at a four year institution.

  2. Previous experience in animal care, working with animals, including pets, i.e., dogs and cats.

  3. Knowledge of feeding protocols and animal behavior is an asset.

  4. Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  5. Detail-oriented with a focus on accurate record-keeping.

  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  7. Comfortable working with live animals and following established procedures.

  8. Able to lift 25 pounds.

  9. Track record of being reliable and dependable.

Work Schedule

• Temporary Part-Time

  1. Monday to Friday, as needed.

  2. Availability on weekends for 2-3 hours.

  3. Responsible for adhering to feeding protocols, including providing care for animals three times a day for a week after their arrival, following specified schedules.

  4. Monthly schedule planning in advance.

• Must have the ability to commute to Emory Campus multiple times a day.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
