Description

The Division of Animal Resources at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking for an experienced Veterinary Technician III for a full-time position to support the Veterinary Medicine department’s Animal Biosafety Level 3 work in the Division of Animal Resources. The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and skill working with nonhuman primate and/or rodent infectious disease models at ABSL-3, including safe work practices, recognizing the appearance of abnormal health conditions, and providing veterinary care to animals and research support to investigators. Specifically, ABSL-3 work with SARS-CoV-2/ COVID19 will be a focus for this position. The qualified candidate will have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and enjoy working on a team in a fast-paced environment. This position reports directly to the Vet Tech Supervisor and Chief of Clinical Operations.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under minimal supervision, assists veterinarians and researchers in anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care, radiology, animal care and treatments.

  • Observes animals and reports abnormalities, sickness, and injury.

  • Assists in diagnostic, preventative and research procedures.

  • Under minimal supervision, may perform minor surgical procedures or other minor invasive procedures.

  • Assists in colony management.

  • May assist in data collection or reporting for designated aspects of research, animal care programs, or colony management.

  • May participate in integrated program of animal environmental enrichment.

  • Maintains animal records and inventory.

  • Assists in capture and restraint of animals.

  • Aids in training new veterinary and/or animal care technicians.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take special precautions against and/or be immunized against hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires two years of occupational specific training from a college or university or an associate's degree in biology or related field, AND four years veterinary technical experience with a minimum of two years in a laboratory animal setting.

OR

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field AND two years veterinary technical experience in the laboratory animal field.

  • Certification at the LAT level by AALAS may substitute for the educational requirement but requires five years veterinary technical experience, and certification at the LATg level by AALAS requires four years veterinary technical experience. Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.

  • A valid Georgia's divers license and an insurable driving record.

  • Certification at ALAT level preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with animals and agents at Animal Biosafety Level 3

  • Specific interest in working on SARS-CoV-2/ COVID 19 research in animal models

  • Valid Veterinary Technician certification

  • Experience working with rodents and nonhuman primates

  • Strong interpersonal skills and team-oriented approach

  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring in the Operating Room

  • AALAS certification at ALAT level

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Located at the Yerkes Main Station in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • The work schedule will be Monday-Friday 7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. (rotating weekend and Holiday required)

  • Occasional after-hours work may be required.

  • Work may be physically demanding and include procedures that involve pushing, pulling, and lifting animals up to 50 lbs or 25 kg.

  • This position also requires exposure to biohazards and potentially dangerous animals.

  • A valid driver’s license and insurable driving record may be necessary.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
