The Department of Medicine (DOM) at Emory University has over 800 full-time academic faculty members supporting 10 divisions. Our faculty are leaders in research; treat patients with cutting-edge procedures and clinical techniques; and help to educate and train the next generation of the country’s brightest physicians through our medical school, residency, and fellowship programs. Within Emory Healthcare/Emory Clinic, the Internal Medicine Specialties include over 375 physicians and advanced practice providers and over 300 staff deployed across 18 sites. These sites see over 765,000 patient encounters annually, with over $143m in revenue.

Reporting directly to the Chair of Medicine, Executive Associate Dean and Chief Business Officer of the School of Medicine, and directly accountable to leadership of the Physician Division of Emory Healthcare (Chief Financial Officer for budgeting; Senior VP for Physician Services for all clinical operations; and ultimately the President), the Vice President for Internal Medicine/Executive Administrator for Clinical Affairs and Administration is a chief clinical administrative partner to the Chair of Medicine and Senior Vice President and provides overall operational, strategic, and financial leadership of the Internal Medicine Specialties within Emory Healthcare/Emory Clinic/Emory Specialty Associates. They are also a partner with the DOM Executive Administrator for Academic Affairs and Administration to develop departmental long-term and short-term strategic goals and objectives and ensure that the department operates effectively and efficiently. This individual works closely with the Chair of Medicine, DOM Executive Administrator for Academic Affairs and Administration and DOM division leadership teams to plan and develop comprehensive Emory Healthcare/Emory Clinic/Emory Specialty Associates budgets; direct financial planning and analysis; oversee the Emory Healthcare/Emory Clinic/Emory Specialty Associates component of physician compensation and deployment; prepare and submit capital requests; and direct overall operations for the Internal Medicine Specialties. Working closely with Emory Clinic leadership, the Chair of Medicine, and division administration, this key leader ensures financial stability while controlling expenses. This individual is a key champion and supporter of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and practice and addresses human resources issues and is accountable for effectively managing employee performance and providing feedback on an ongoing basis. This individual is a content expert and internal consultant for physician leadership, clinical faculty, and administrators across the physician practices regarding clinical activities, strategic planning and implementation, quality, integration of information technology, and operational tactics.


  • Plans, coordinates, and is accountable for major administrative and clinical activities including grants and contracts, budget planning, financial analysis, data processing operations, and human resources management for multiple departments or large divisions with direct supervision of Senior Administrators and other key leadership roles.

  • Has responsibility for a specific service line, health system affiliation, and/or academic oversight, including overall budget responsibility.

  • Administers organizational policies and procedures within the department, holding final decision-making responsibility on complex, precedent setting situations in collaboration with the Department Chair.

  • Works with Department Chairs within the service line to develop, administer and monitor the capital equipment, operations, and personnel budgets.

  • Develops plans to ensure that generated clinical revenues increase each year while limiting expenses.

  • Works with Department Chairs to establish goals and objectives for the department(s); monitors progress towards their achievement.

  • Develops and implements various clinical and administrative programs to enhance employees' skills and to improve the effectiveness of existing clinical services.

  • Develops new programs to ensure the growth of the department and meet the changing demands for new services.

  • Acts as a liaison between management and other schools/departments concerning clinical activities and issues.

  • Ensures required record-keeping is maintained.

  • Develops and implements formal training and development programs for staff.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Master's degree, preferably in business, finance, or related science field, and 10 years of professional business or management experience which includes experience in a clinical or healthcare environment, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

  • Previous supervisory experience.


  • Experience in an academic medical center setting with matrixed reporting relationships, shared services models and physician practice management is highly preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills are required.

  • Attention to detail and strong computer software skills are necessary to develop and present critical, confidential information.

  • Must bring exceptional integrity, intelligence, maturity and successful experience navigating complex organizational settings.

  • Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, make sound judgments, handle confidential information and be a creative, energetic problem solver.
