FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Provides technical and scientific expertise for programs in the areas of communicable disease, chronic disease and environmental epidemiology.

Designs, conducts and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects and analyzes data and develops health education materials.

Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and international impact.

Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports. May write publishable articles and papers.

Serves as a liaison to and works with other groups and organizations participating in related programs.

May travel internationally to supervise field operations. Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree in a field related to area of research or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • International travel required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD, DrPH, or MSc in epidemiology or related field.

  • At least three (3) years of experience working as an epidemiologist.

  • At least three (3) years of demonstrated field experience in support of a global health program.

  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and survey design and supervision.

  • Experience in behavioral sciences, program monitoring, and health education.

  • Demonstrated experience in scientific manuscript writing with at least three (3) publications as first author in a peer-reviewed journal(s).

  • Demonstrated proficiency using quantitative data analysis software (e.g. SAS, Stata).

  • Demonstrated proficiency using GIS mapping software platforms (e.g. ArcGIS).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English; proficiency in oral and written French and/or Spanish.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

  • Full-time, term-limited (2-year) position

  • This is an Exempt position. Employees in this position are paid a salary on a monthly basis and are not eligible to receive overtime pay.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

Children Without Worms (CWW) is an international non-governmental public health program of the TFGH in partnership with Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithKline. CWWsupports global efforts to control soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) through technical support to national STH control programs. CWW is the secretariat of the STH Coalition, a partnership of over 50 implementing, donor, and research organizations, and the STH Advisory Committee, an independent expert advisory body providing technical and programmatic guidance to the STH Coalition, the World Health Organization, and other partners.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Epidemiologist supports and improves the quality of STH programming through technical leadership.

The incumbent will implement and oversee, with the CWW Director, CWW technical initiatives. Specific

responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as program focal point on STH-related operational research and technical activities.

  • Advise CWW-supported national STH programs on relevant technical issues.

  • Leadership activities: translates study/survey data into program startegies in coordination with CWW Director and Deputy Director; develops technical and position papers for WHO and other venues as requested.

  • Help lead the design and implementation of population-based program monitoring surveys.

  • Lead and participate on teams responsible for the creation of products, services, and tools that support effective STH control implementation in endemic countries.

  • Investigate and identify possible leveraging of existing epidemiologic surveys, e.g. Demographic Health Surveys [DHS]) to improve the evidence based for STH control programs and global policy makers.

  • Conduct and/or supervise literature reviews.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with WHO technical staff, funding partners, and scientific collaborators.

  • Identify, analyze, and report on key data to track the progress of national and global trends on STH control efforts.

  • Provide technical support to initiatives of the STH Advisory Committee including its monitoring & evaluation sub-committee.

  • Serve as a technical resource for STH Coalition activities and partners.

  • Participate in international, national, and domestic scientific conferences and other relevant meetings as a speaker, facilitator, or discussant.

  • Make actionable recommendations to the CWW Director/Deputy Director on key technical gaps in program activities.

  • Perform others duties as required and/or assigned by the CWW Director/Deputy Director.

  • Participate fully as a member of the Task Force for Global Health by contributing, assisting and participating in projects, activities, and initiatives as requested by management.

TRAVEL: 15 – 20% domestic and international
