JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, observes, evaluates, reports, and records the electrocardiogram results for monitored patients. Performs transtelephonic pacemaker evaluation; scanning of Holter monitors; BP monitors; and signal averaged EKG. Assists with providing ancillary duties including collection, hook-up of Holter monitor, event recording. Performs other related duties as required. Greets patients in a friendly, courteous manner; assists with scheduling patient appointments, obtaining pre-certifications and obtaining referrals. Answers telephone in a friendly, polite manner; screens calls and responds to routine questions; takes messages in accordance with physician's and/ or nurses instructions. Assists with set up and maintenance of office files of patient records, reports and correspondence, and miscellaneous information. Prepares charts prior to office visit per clinic policy. Assists with preparation of charge sheets for outpatient services and billing as necessary. Maintains equipment. Checks and ensures that monitors are functioning accurately. Performs back up EKG and Holter/ BP/ Event Monitor hook-up on patients in cardiology clinic. Operates standard office equipment including copier, computer and fax machine. As part of a patient focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment, so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced. Communicates with patients and all members of the health care team to relay appropriate information and provide comprehensive patient care. Reinforces patient and family education. Observes and reports significant information about the patient and environment to the Registered Nurse and documents relevant information on appropriate flow sheet in a timely manner. Participates in shift report as required. Responds immediately to emergency situations. Observes and evaluates continuous EKG monitoring. Reports significant observations of the patient, monitor, and environment to the Registered Nurse, according to defined procedures. Records telemetry/cardiac findings. Changes electrodes according to procedures. Runs strip every shift for evaluation by a Registered Nurse. Under the supervision of the RN, performs transtelephonic pacemaker evaluations; ensures complete and accurate documentation of all transtelephonic pacemaker evaluations. Scans Holter monitors, BP monitors and signal averaged EKG. Demonstrates ability to prioritize observations and report significant findings to the RN/ physician. Demonstrate ability to recognize normal pacemaker function, cardiac dysrhythmias, and pacemaker malfunction. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Participates in orientation of staff to the unit and precepts new, temporary, and float monitor technicians to the unit. Serves as a resource/model by complying with standards of care and with Department of Nursing, hospital, and university policies and procedures. Participates in unit-based and hospital-wide Continuous Quality Improvement Program. Supports cost efficient/effective delivery of care. May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent. One year patient care experience or successful completion of a nursing assistant training course. Some positions may require successful completion of an electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation course.
