Service Chief for Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Atlanta VA Medical Center (VAMC), with dual employment as an appointed member of the faculty in the Emory University School of Medicine (SOM) Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology (HMO):

Leadership (0.20 FTE) in VAMC:

  • Supervise hematology and oncology professional services, with respect to quality, availability, proficiency, productivity, efficiency, and compliance. Evaluate the clinical performance of hem/onc physicians and evaluate candidates for hematology and medical oncology privileges.

  • Work with nursing and administrative leaders to ensure the quality, effectiveness, and safety of cancer services and clinical research.

  • Organize physician schedule availability, and work with faculty division directors to schedule inpatient service coverage. Facilitate scheduling of house staff rotations and clinics and corresponding teaching faculty responsibilities.

  • Participate/lead medical staff committees as appropriate and necessary (quality, credentialing, practice standards, pharmacy and therapeutics, etc.)

  • Participate in strategic decisions that affect cancer services (space planning, recruitment).

  • Participate in annual budget development process as necessary and manage fiscal performance of the hem/onc practice, in cooperation with VAMC, SOM Department and others.

  • Provide leadership for the research mission in hematology and oncology at the Atlanta VAMC.

Individual Effort (0.80 FTE):

  • Provide direct professional services to cancer patients: approximately 3 weekly half-days in hematology/oncology clinics, and 4-6 annual inpatient/consult service weeks. Collaborate with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary setting to deliver comprehensive cancer services.

  • Initiate and supervise clinical research projects in your field of interest, publish and present results, with the expectation to secure and maintain extramural support for a corresponding portion of your own salary.

  • Train Emory residents and fellows in multiple VAMC settings, give didactic lectures as appropriate for students and trainees.

Position and Reporting Structure:

  • Faculty appointment in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine.

  • Dual reporting to the Chief of Medicine at the Atlanta VAMC and to the Chair of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Medical Licensure in the state of Georgia.

  • ABIM certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.

  • At least 5 years of medical practice experience in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.

  • Experience in leadership, academic scholarship, sponsored clinical research, and medical education.

  • Experience in the VA Health System is preferred.
